LAURIE GALLARDO + LATTE WITH ALMOND SYRUP
Laurie Gallardo is the producer and voice of the Austin Music Minute, and host of an afternoon music show, Monday through Thursday 2pm-5pm, on KUTX 98.9 in Austin, Texas. The native El Pasoan moved to Austin in 2002, and began work part-time at KUT 90.5 as a late-night show host, and stand-in for drive-time host Bob Branson.
Gallardo is curator and host of a project outside of the KUTX sphere, The Good Music Club, an independent live music event and online video music series featuring all Austin-based musical artists making their mark on the local scene and beyond. And Gallardo is also a voice actor, represented by The Atherton Group, and featured on various video games, anime series, commercials, narration for technical videos and locally-produced theatrical projects.
Gallardo made her big-screen debut in the 2014 independent thriller, Two Step, written and directed by Alex Johnson, and recently completed filming for writer/director Lisa Donato’s forthcoming independent film, Foxy Trot.
“DJ El Gee” is an avid supporter of Austin-based organizations Project ATX6 and Black Fret, both of which support local musicians. And, when not listening to music or seeing shows, she enjoys the work of several of her favorite U.K.-based comedians, including Eddie Izzard, Ross Noble, Richard Ayoade, Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, Sandi Toksvig, Aisling Bea, and the late Victoria Wood.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GO TO COFFEE DRINK?
My tastes in coffee are actually quite simple. I always, always prefer a dark roast – dark, like my heart. And most of my wardrobe. Then, all I need is a touch of hazelnut. This could be everything from a hazelnut creamer to hazelnut syrup with a dash of milk. Almond milk is perfectly acceptable. And speaking of almond…if I could flavor my coffee with almond instead, that would seriously be the pot of gold I don’t get my hands on often enough. Almond is my favorite, though it seems a bit hard to find an establishment that can make this possible.
DESCRIBE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE ASSOCIATED WITH COFFEE?
Where on earth do I start with my most memorable coffee experience(s)? One that sticks out: Like, around 2010, maybe? A glorious morning-early afternoon-ish following a night of staying up far too late. My friend, stylist Jody Rivera, had just given me one of my rock ’n’ roll haircuts the day before, and it was still in spiky Joan Jett/Johnny Thunders mode. To make matters more interesting, I was wearing these obnoxious mirrored aviator shades. My friend Russell G. Ochoa joined me for brunch at Frank, and he snapped a photo of me that is now notorious, where I’m looking very much like the ego maniac saying, “Stop talking. Need coffee. More caffeine. Ugh.” What a weasel. But it certainly was funny.
DO YOU MAKE COFFEE AT HOME? IF SO, HOW DO YOU PREPARE IT?
I do make coffee at home, from time to time…if I get up at a semi-reasonable hour that gives me time to do so. I have a coffee grinder to grind the beans – dark roast, mind you. My coffee maker is basic, nothing fancy. Then, when it’s ready, it’s time for that dash of hazelnut creamer. Not too sweet. And there you go.
WHAT WAS THE CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING YOUR PLAYLIST?
These are just generally badass tracks. Doesn’t matter what genre they belong to. But you will notice that the energy slowly builds upward from track to track. I usually prefer quiet time when I’m consuming my brew, but I also need an extra jolt to wake me up. Nothing complicated in my selection criteria. They all go well with my caffeine intake. And after I’m caffeinated, I can start dancing around like an effing basket case.
