BRIAN BATCH + CORTADO
BRIAN BATCH / Co-Owner BIRD BIRD BISCUIT / Musician
My name is Brian Batch. I am a husband and a father of two, soon to be three. My favorite quote pretty much sums up my mindset about life. It is by Ram Dass. He says, “We are all just walking each other home.” I love to love things, and I very much enjoy to smile. My hope with anything I am ever involved with is that it can be a conduit to bring people in this world a little closer together. At this particular moment I am doing that with biscuits. For a decade I did that with coffee. This whole thing has been a very fun ride and as long as I am breathing, I intend to enjoy it :)
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GO TO COFFEE DRINK?
I would say my most favorite coffee to drink would be a cortado. To me, the cortado is the perfect balance of the beauty in aspects that coffee can offer. If the shot is spot on and the milk texture is proper, the cortado is the perfect milky, sweet, caffeine-filled shooter or sipper.
DESCRIBE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE ASSOCIATED WITH COFFEE?
Early on in my coffee drinking days, there was a barista who worked at Houndstooth that served me a bomb cappuccino. The part that made it really special was how new I was to coffee. I didn’t really know how complex it could be. When the barista explained to me that I should expect to taste blueberries and cream, I just looked at him like... Then I took a sip... Such a mind bender for me at that stage of my coffee exploration to have such a spot on description of what I should expect and then a spot on delivery. It was blueberry and cream all day long. That mixed with how kind the barista was really made it something special for me.
DO YOU MAKE COFFEE AT HOME? IF SO, HOW DO YOU PREPARE IT?
To be honest, I don’t make coffee at home. We have a GB5 at our shop, and so I usually prefer to just make myself espresso based drinks there. That or I will just have a cup of drip from the batch brewer.
WHAT WAS THE CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING YOUR PLAYLIST?
I am a firm believer that the right music can really enhance any experience. When it comes to choosing my tracks, what I feel important is how the music feels in all aspects. How the instrumentation and the mix brings out the warmth of the tone. How the chord structure feels in my spirit. Is it uplifting, peaceful, joy-filled, calming, beautiful? Is the subject matter something I can support? All of these things really play. For me, Motown and soul music are right up my alley.
Add 2 ounces of milk to espresso for a total of 4 ounces
Steamed milk for a Cortado should be warm not hot
Cortado comes from the Spanish verb cortar, which means to cut. A small amount of espresso is pulled into a small glass cup and then it's cut with an equal amount of steamed milk.
A perfect blend of espresso and milk.
